There are just some things we learn to do but often never ask, wonder, or even know why we’re supposed to do them. Sound familiar?
It’s no exception when it comes to hiring a local roofer to work on your Maryland home. The thing we’ve all heard is to always hire a LICENSED roofing contractor. And we want to tell you why.
First of all, the license we’re talking about is a Maryland Home Improvement Commission license, or MHIC for short. The MHIC license is issued by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission, an agency of the Maryland Department of Labor. The State of Maryland, requires under Maryland law, that all roofing contractors have a valid license.
You’re still probably wondering “why” that is so important.
The biggest benefit of hiring a licensed contractor is that the MHIC actually protects you, the homeowner! That’s right- it is for your protection.
Besides the obvious benefits, that a contractor with a license is actually a legit professional, their MHIC requires them to operate a business in a way that keeps the customer’s best interest first. There are guidelines and rules a contractor must follow in order to obtain and maintain their MHIC license.
Some of those rules pertain to contract laws, having adequate insurance policies, providing and honoring warranties, and keeping homeowners informed of their rights.
Still wondering “why” it is so important to hire a licensed contractor and how it is for your protection?
When you hire a local licensed Maryland roofing contractor, and something goes wrong, the Maryland Home Improvement Commission is on your side! The Commission investigates complaints by homeowners, awards monetary damages against licensed contractors, and prosecutes violators of the home improvement law and regulations.
There is even a Guaranty Fund with money set aside for wronged homeowners seeking compensation for damages. The following can be found directly on Maryland’s Department o Labors website:
” The Commission has a Guaranty Fund (The Fund) supported by licensed contractors, who pay a Guaranty Fund assessment when they obtain their Home Improvement license and each time they renew their license. This Fund compensates homeowners for actual monetary losses due to poor workmanship or failure to perform a home improvement contract. The Fund applies only to work done by licensed contractors. The maximum amount that a homeowner may recover through the Fund is the amount paid to the contractor, up to $20,000. If the total amount of all claims against a contractor equals more than $100,000, then each homeowner’s award is pro-rated based upon the total amount awarded to each claimant .”
If you hire a local roofer and something goes wrong, you are protected. But here’s the catch- the roofer must have a valid MHIC license. And thats why it is so important to only hire a licensed roofer in the state of Maryland.
How do you know if the roofer you are hiring is licensed? There are a few ways to find out.
The easiest way is to just ask the roofer to see the license. A licensed roofer will be happy to show you. We here at Piney Orchard Roofing are proud of our license, MHIC# 93190-01.
Another way is to visit Maryland’s website to do a search of the roofing contractor. To view the status of any contractor’s MHIC, please visit the following website:
